The Institute of Materials Science and Techniques (ISTM) of the Ferhat Abbas University of Sétif , was created on March 2022.
The ISTM is a center for excellence; dedicated to education, as well as fundamental and applied research in the field of materials. It brings together internationally renowned researchers from diverse disciplines (chemistry, physics, materials science, etc.) who work in close collaboration to address major societal challenges and explore new pathways for designing innovative materials with optimized properties, meeting the demands of energy, environment, health, and information technologies.
The Institute for Science and Technology of Materials, is a key player in innovation and specialized in polymer engineering and biomaterials. It also covers other types of materials such as ceramics, glasses, thin films, as well as materials used for energy production and storage, thereby fostering a multidisciplinary approach.
The Institute offers a wide range of programs such as the Bachelor, Master and PhD degrees (the students are nationwide enrolled), thus preparing the future leaders of innovation in the fields of plastics engineering and materials science in Algeria. Students are assisted in the acquisition of the necessary skills to design, characterize, and implement advanced and next-generation materials for the energy, health, and environmental sectors.
One of the main objectives of the ISTM is to support innovation, research, and development in these fields, while serving as a center for training and collaboration between academics and the industry. The teaching language at the ISTM is English in line with international standards and to facilitate collaboration with foreign partners.
The ISTM has currently 669 undergraduate students, supervised by 38 faculty members, including 10 professors, 21 lecturers (categories A and B), and 11 assistant lecturers. It is structured into two departments (Polymer Engineering and Biomaterials) and also hosts two research laboratories (LPCHP and LMPMP).
The ISTM is based on the Maabouda campus and has benefited from the former central library facilities. These are to be adequately restored so as to host the activities of the institute.
